Homemade Thousand Island Dressing

Holy crap, it's been a year since we updated this blog!  Yes, I really AM that bad at blogging..LOL!

I have been meaning to add a few recipes on here for MYO (Make Your Own) items that you normally by ready-made in the store, but a little more healthier than the store-bought items.  One of my chief complaints about store-bought items such as dressings and seasoning mixes (taco, fajita, Lipton's onion soup mix, even simple herbal seasonings such as Italian seasoning) have FAR too much salt in them.  With so many people having high blood pressure, heart problems, etc, spending the 5 minutes to mix your own stuff out of a few items you already HAVE in the fridge and cabinets is worth the extra year you might add to the lives of your family.

I decided to make salad for lunch tonight, and since my RL other half has been asking for me to make homemade dressing again, I whipped up some.

I am going to post a picture of the ingredients, so that you can see what I am referring to with some of them (chili sauce was hard for me to find, until I knew what in the heck I was looking for).  The names are in English and French, because of where I live IRL.

Thousand Island Dressing

Makes about 1 1/4 cups of dressing

Ingredients
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt plus more to taste
3/4 cup prepared or homemade mayonnaise
1/4 cup bottled chili sauce (or use this recipe: http://www.food.com/recipe/chili-sauce-192123?scaleto=.25&mode=null&st=true)
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 1/2 tablespoons minced dried onion
2 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish (optional, gives it a kick)
Freshly ground black pepper

Directions

In a mixing bowl, mix together all the ingredients.Use within a week.
Awesome not only as a salad dressing, but also as a sandwich spread, or a dipping sauce for veggies or chicken or seafood.. use your imagination.

The Lineup

Yes, I collect pasta sauce jars...lol  The inset photo is a picture of what the dressing looks like.
